Tips to Handle Workplace Conflict

You can address problems at work in many ways, but handling conflicts at work should be done in a professional and intelligent manner.

Here are some tips to handle workplace conflict:

Tip 1: Talk with the other person. Arrange to meet with the other person in a place where you wonít be interrupted.

Tip 2: Focus on behavior and events, not on personalities. Describe a specific instance or event instead of generalizing.

Tip 3: Listen carefully. Listen to the other person and avoid interrupting them.

Tip 4: Identify points of agreement and disagreement. Summarize the areas of agreement and disagreement. Ask the other person if he or she agrees with your assessment.

Tip 5: Prioritize the areas of conflict. Discuss which areas of conflict are most important to each of you to resolve.

Tip 6: Develop a plan to work on each conflict. Start with the most important conflict and setup future meeting times to continue your discussions.

Tip 7: Follow through on your plan. Stick with the discussions until youíve worked through each area of conflict.

Tip 8: Build on your success. Look for opportunities to point out progress. Compliment the other personís insights and achievements.
