Let’s face it, pets are a part of our family unit and they enrich our lives in so many ways. Dogs especially become our closest friend and companion. Depending on the dog’s breed, your dog may be very protective over you as well. If you are a responsible dog owner, you vow to do whatever is needed to properly care for your dog. However, it is so difficult to watch them lose energy and decline as they get older.

Here’s five great tips to help care for your senior dog as they get older:

• Tip 1 – Pay attention to changes in behavior; Look for unusual behaviors to help you catch problems early

• Tip 2 – Watch what you are feeding them; Older dogs are less active and require less calories; Don’t feed dogs from the table

• Tip 3 – Look for signs of arthritis; These can include difficulty climbing stairs, decreased activity and stiffness in the joints; Ask your vet for medication to help your dog feel better

• Tip 4 – Pay attention to early signs of canine cognitive dysfunction; Discuss options with your vet to better care for your dog

• Tip 5 – Be patient with your elderly friend; Give him lots of love and attention

As responsible pet owners, we strive to provide the best care for our companions. However, watching your senior dog decline is still not easy to handle, but it is important to seek the proper outside resources, such as your local vet or a dog rescue facility, that will help all of you through this difficult time.
