The holidays are now over, but you still find yourself sad and depressed. Believe it or not, you are not alone. More than 10 million people in the United States suffer from seasonal depression, which is often referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD can be defined as a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year. SAD can be triggered by the changing of the seasons, particularly the shift from summer and fall to winter. Unfortunately, post-holiday blues can hit hard when all the shopping and parties are over as well.
Here’s some tips to help you overcome depression during January:
• Tip 1 – Practice self-care daily. Examples include a warm bath, manicure, pedicure, massage, haircut, meditation, and going out with friends.
• Tip 2 – Nurture yourself by uplifting your atmosphere and notice how it feels. Add dimmer lighting, scented candles, or relaxing music.
• Tip 3 – Spend time practicing mindfulness throughout your day. Eat your food slowly, practice breathing techniques, or mindfully scan your body to check in with your senses.
• Tip 4 – Random acts of kindness shifts the focus from ourselves to others.
• Tip 5 – Keep a gratitude journal to express your inner thoughts to help increase happiness, improve sleep, and reduce depression.
If none of these tips seem to help you during this difficult time, seek professional help from a licensed psychiatrist, psychologist or therapist so you can have an outlet to discuss your situation.
