Good Listener (1)
It is so important to be a good listener because we all know how good it feels when we’re heard by others. Being a good listener is similar to having good manners. However, it’s a quality that doesn’t seem to be a social requirement any longer. If you practice your listening skills, it sets you apart from the crowd. For example, good listeners can improve relationships, become an excellent problem solver, increase confidence, retain more information, and avoid conflicts.

Here’s some great tips to help your child become a good listener:

• Tip 1 – Watch for non-verbal communication and tone of voice.

• Tip 2 – Take the time to ask probing questions.

• Tip 3 – Don’t interrupt or change the subject.

• Tip 4 – Remove or avoid distractions.

• Tip 5 – Clearly state your expectations.

• Tip 6 – Keep messages simple.

• Tip 7 – Model good listening skills yourself.

• Tip 8 – Allow for natural consequences.

• Tip 9 – Empathize, sympathize, and show interest in a conversation.

As you can see, becoming a good listener is a skill you must practice on a regular basis. Strive to work on becoming more of a listener than a talker. In addition, learn to read other people’s facial expressions and body language as well. Believe it or not, as you become a more skilled listener, you’ll find people gravitate toward you more for your opinion and feedback.
